Perhaps changing the icon that appears next to your website’s address in the address bar isn’t your top priority when you set up a new site… but its definitely on the list. If not, it should be. If you spend ANY amount of time customizing your site, then the default “folded paper” icon just won’t cut it. Here’s how to change it.
Old and Busted
First, you’ll need an icon. This is simply a graphic image like a jpg or a gif… unfortunately, whatever graphics application you use may not be able to handle it. I’ve done this lots of times, and I’ve always used some kind of special icon-making software to produce these images. And by “special”, I mean “free”.
One such software is the Favicon Editor that allows you to create the icon right in your web browser… and, more importantly, it allows you to convert an existing image into an icon. The restriction here is that the image has to be a PNG image that is 16×16 in size. These icons have to fit in your browser’s address bar, remember…. so they have to be tiny. Other icon creator tools can read other formats besides PNG, so if you have some problem with PNGs… wtf is wrong with you? use another tool. A google search for “Favicon Generator” or something similar will return plenty for you to choose from. Not all of them are free, however.
Once you have created a 16×16 image, save it in the PNG format.
Then go to the Favicon Editor. Most of the screen on that website is take up with the tool that allows you to draw your own icon… but you’re bringing your own icon to the party, so you can ignore that and go right for the line that says “Upload a PNG”.
Click the browse button, browse to your PNG file, and click on Faviconify! button. Yeah, somebody’s trying to be funny. At this point, the web page will ask you to download a zip file that contains your icon. Do so. Inside the zip is a file called “favicon.ico”. Extract it from the zip and upload it to the root directory of your website.
Almost done.
Once the icon is in place, you’ll need to link it to your web page(s) by adding a line of HTML. In the header of the page, between “<head>” and “</head>”, add the following:

Where, obviously, you replace WEBSITE with the name of your site. Here’s what it looks like in the source code to my site:

If you’re doing this on a blog, then where/how you add this line may vary depending on which theme you’re using. You’re looking for any option that adds information to the page header. If you find no such option, then you can hack edit the php template.
With that line added, when you reload your page you should see your icon in the address bar, like so:

If you’re using Firefox (and you should be), you’ll also see the icon in the tab for your site when you have multiple tabs open, AND in the bookmark buttons. On any DECENT browser you’ll also see it next to the name of your site on your bookmarks menu. For that to happen, you may have to unbookmark and re-bookmark your site, depending on your browser.

Somehow, Firefox and Safari displays the favicon just fine.
However, the same cannot be said about IE.
I wonder why IE misbehaves when it comes to favicon…

favicons appear more than just next to the URL bar - they appears in the favourites menu, in tabs too. Keep it simple though in terms of design because you only have 16 x 16 pixels to play with. Too elaborate a design and it will look a mess.
